The fourth annual SDI LaFarga food drive to benefit Associated Churches of Fort Wayne and Allen County grew beyond the walls of our facility this year. We challenged our coworkers at Superior Aluminum Alloys (New Haven) and Iron Dynamics (Butler), both subsidiaries of Steel Dynamics Inc., to a friendly competition benefiting area food banks.
SDI LaFarga kept with the previous year’s internal competition, dividing the 75 plant employees into eight teams. The group wanted to set new records, beyond their 2018 total of 25,000 pounds of food, so they began calling on contractors and community partners for additional support. Teams were humbled, yet beaming with pride, as a truck arrived with 33,000 pounds of canned goods from a nearby Campbell’s Soup factory. All items were donated at no cost, and Reilly Trucking provided the freight free of charge. In total, the facility collected 52,128 pounds of food, doubling their previous record. The Associated Churches pantry did not have the capacity to accept the complete donation, allowing Community Harvest Food Bank to share in the canned goods.
“I am overwhelmed by the generosity and hard work everyone put into this, said Jerry Evans, Operations Manager at SDI LaFarga. “My sincerest thank you to this group for stepping up and inspiring other area organizations to join in supporting the community. The food drive would not have been such a great success without each of their contributions.”
Thank you to all who supported our food drive through monetary, food and transportation donations!
